A possible hope of variety of games produced in South Korea?
Since early 2010, the Korean gaming industry has been stagnated deeply. While indie game developers struggle to find financial support to keep developing, the bigger game developing company renews their already 10 years old IP with the exact same format of billing and play style.
It has not been changed since the pandemic. Even so, there has been outstanding progress to new trials and development past decade as we all know.
But still, there might be a possible hope that the Korean gaming industry seeks a new and various genre of the game that gamers and different generations can play… very slowly.
If you are a gamer, you might already see gamescom 2021 opening night live. Literally, in that live event, we all can see so much new and exciting content and story of the game that are currently developing and getting ready to be out there.
One of them has caught my eyes.
It’s not just because the developer is based in South Korea. Their motivation of how it starts to developing is all about generations every human being got through and for family. And it’s DokeV!

As the developers walked through their motivation how to get into this idea for a new world and how a Korean-themed-packed game can be created in the short video here, This game looks what most grown-ups are experienced once or twice through their childhoods. What’s more amazing to watch and interesting is that these Korean elements are almost zero cultural differences to someone who knows zero things about the childhood of ordinary Korean.
More importantly, gamers all around the world could feel like this game is another version of Pokemon in the open world. Like we can call it K-Pokemon. Pokemon has got into almost everyone since it’s released with a different version of content from a child to an adult. If DokeV could capture Pokemon’s generations to generations sensibility and nostalgia for gamers around the world, it could be a hit for a household family game.
