모비우스 (Morbius)
극장에서 놓친 SSU 영화 한 편을 일요일 밤에 쓰윽 감상했습니다.
사실 자세히 읽진 않았어도 개봉 전 여러 이슈와 혹평이 오갔으며, 밈(meme)가 영화보다 더 화제가 되었다는 걸 대략적으로 알고 있었기에 어느 정도 마음을 내려놓고 본 건 사실입니다. 킬링 타임용으로 캐릭터 서사만 빌드업 하는 수준으로 마무리되었지만, 다음 작품이 나왔으면 하는 바람으로 감상기 시작합니다.
배우들의 호연
소니 스파이더 유니버스 3편 작품으로 재개봉까지 한 이 영화에서 호연을 펼친 자레드 레토 및 등장한 배우들의 노력은 인정해줘야 할 거 같습니다.
자레드 레토의 메소드 연기는 사실 무섭기까지 한 수준이라는 점은 기존 그의 작품에서 드러났다고 생각합니다. 게다가 인물 자체도 방부제를 먹은 거 같이 실제 나이보다 더 젊은 모습이라, 살아 있는 뱀파이어 역할에 맞는 인물이라고 생각합니다. 루시안 역의 배우의 크레이지한 연기도 상당히 인상 깊었기에 이 영화에 배우들이 녹아 들었다고 생각되지 싶습니다. 캐릭터 디벨롭을 짧은 러닝 타임에 다루다보니 스토리 흐름상 구멍이 좀 생긴 거 같긴 하지만, 늘어지게 길게 디벨롭하다가 극장을 찾은 관객들을 잠으로 이끈 마블 영화도 있다 보니, 어느 정도 감안할 수 있는 수준이라고 생각합니다.
SSU의 상대적 저예산 히어로 영화의 갈 길
예산이 크게 들어간 히어로 무비가 아니었기 때문에 제작비의 2배에 달하는 수익을 올린 것으로 보입니다. 흥행 여부를 장담할 수 없으니 영화사에서 예산 제한을 두는 건 어쩔 수 없는 수순이지 싶습니다. 그러다보니 영화의 기승전결에 일부 구멍이 생기기도 하고, 다음 영화의 떡밥을 깔고자 드려낸 쿠키들과의 구멍 메우기가 관건일 것 같습니다.
일례로 모비우스의 세계로 넘어온 스파이더맨의 적, 벌쳐가 모비우스와 팀업을 제안하였는데, 모비우스가 왜 스파이더맨에게 반감을 갖는 것인지가 'Intriguing' 이라고 답하는 모비우스의 단어 하나로는 영화 상에서는 설명이 안 됩니다. 게다가 모비우스가 중간에 베놈을 언급하는 신이 있는데, 모비우스의 세계관에 베놈이 존재하는 것이라는 뜻일지요? 이것도 명확하지 않습니다.
대박이 나는 영화에 막대한 예산이 들어가야 한다는 공식은 성립하지 않지만, 이야기의 흐름과 구멍은 메우는 수준의 이야기와 연출이 수반되어야 소니에서 이어나가고 있는 스파이더맨 유니버스에 더 힘이 실리지 않을까라고 생각합니다.
앞으로 나올 크레이븐 더 헌터와 기획 중인 마담 웹 등의 라인업을 보고 있자면, 소니 스파이더맨 세계관의 스파이더맨이 어스파에서 비롯될 것이라는 추측이 많은데요. 정말 그랬으면 좋겠네요.
SSU가 MCU의 기생 버스(verse)가 아니라 상생 버스가 되기를 기대해 봅니다.

I had a chance to watch Morbius on Sunday night.
In fact, I was aware that the memes on the internet have been even more hyped than the actual movie and the movie had gotten a relatively lower rating. So I didn't expect a lot of this movie as a fan. In short, I hope the next sequel movie will hopefully come out soon as this one was okay to be a killing-time movie that was ended to build up the characters. Let's talk about two points I have after watching this movie.
The Actor and Actress's Nice Performance
As you might know, this movie is the 3rd movie in Sony's Spider-man Universe. I have to admit Jared Leto and other actors and actresses' excellent performances in this movie despite the fact that the movie's overall rating was mostly lower than Venom.
It is one of Jared Leto's reputations about his method of acting that is somewhat terrifying to people. And his appearance does really fit this main role which is the living vampire. As for acting, Matt Smith who starred Lussian gave his amazing performance in the scene where he was dancing to dress up. That good matching-up actors' performance made this movie for a good killing-time one.
On the other hand, giving relatively short running time opened some holes in the overall storyline. However, it can get an okay for us as we somehow experienced almost falling asleep while watching one or two recent Marvel movies where the character stories were too long to build up.
Long Journey to Hero Movie in SSU with Low Budget
This movie surprisingly ended up having almost twice over revenue comparing its production cost even though the majority of reviews for the movie seem to consider as a huge flop. Sony seems to put less production budget to be safe in terms of revenue. That being said, it is probably inevitable that we could find some big holes in the overall storyline and CG effects.
For example, I don't get why Morbius has some sort of negativity on Spider-Man when you see one of the cookies where he mentioned 'Intriguing' after Vulture who has crossed the verse said to him that we could team up with Morbius. Another example is that I am not sure whether Morbius also is in the same one as where Venom exists. There is a scene where Morbius mentioned Venom so we only can tell that somehow Morbius knows about Venom.
'The more you could put money in the movie, the more you could earn money.' kind of formula doesn't hold in this modern entertainment world. However, Sony could put more effort to amend how the storyline goes and reasonably effective direction with CG effects so that the long way to go for Spider-man Universe can be really stronger than now.
One thing I can guess at this moment is that Sony's Spider-Man Universe could be the same one with Amazing Spider-Man considering the fact that their upcoming line-ups such as 'Kraven The Hunter' and 'Madame Web' are their upcoming line-ups. Wish that could happen as my favorite Spider-man is Amazing Spider-Man.
Hopefully, Sony's Spider-Man Universe becomes to coexist with Marvel's Spider-Man Universe.
